In the heart of Manchester, an amazing wildlife spectacle is taking place. A family of peregrines
has made its home high above the city’s bustling streets. These agile birds of prey are the fastest
birds in the world, reaching speeds of up to 180 mph in vertical dives. When they’re not catching
prey to feed their chicks, the city’s new residents can be seen perched on ledges of the tallest buildings.

Wednesday 23 November 2011

As part of their ongoing commitment to Rochdale Canal, the Waterways Trust and the BTCV have arranged a series of winter and spring activities along the canal starting this January.

Activities kick off with the first of four towpath tidies with the BTCV on Saturday 21 January.

This will be followed by a Tree Identification Walk along the Newton Heath Towpath on Saturday 28 January. Budding tree enthusiasts (yes, that’s a terrible pun) will be able to join the Waterways Trust’s local expert as they provide insights about local flora, fauna and fungi in the area.

Further towpath tides will then take place on Tuesday 28 February, Wednesday 28 March and Saturday 28 April. And for those really keen outdoorers (pretty sure I’ve made up that word, but I see it catching on) there will be a Wild Food Foraging session on Saturday 7 April!

All these events will begin at Lock 69 at the Newton Heath stretch of the Rochdale Canal.

If you would like more information about these events, including times and how to book a place, please contact the Waterways Trust on 0161 223 1155.
