In the heart of Manchester, an amazing wildlife spectacle is taking place. A family of peregrines
has made its home high above the city’s bustling streets. These agile birds of prey are the fastest
birds in the world, reaching speeds of up to 180 mph in vertical dives. When they’re not catching
prey to feed their chicks, the city’s new residents can be seen perched on ledges of the tallest buildings.

2012 is officially here and after a brief Christmas break, it's time to update you with some excellent bits of news that tried to sneak past us as the year ended!

Firstly, OPAL (whose surveys you may have read about on our pages) took second place at the prestigious National Lottery Awards on Saturday 5 November. OPAL have worked their socks off this past few years to get people involved in nature so it's fantastic to see them receive such recognition.

Also, we also found out on 12 December that the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit's bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund had been successful and will be receiving £500,000 in funding to deliver its "From Grey to Green" project across Greater Manchester. Launching in April of this year, this project will help promote biodiversity and look to encourage a new generation of nature lovers across the City. This is a great piece of news and we at Wildabout would like to thank everyone who was involved in making this happen, especially Manchester Museum and Manchester City Council's Environmental Strategy Team.

And finally, keep an eye on our events page which will soon be filling up with the dates of nature-themed activities and events that you can take part in.

For now though, Wildabout Manchester would like to wish all its readers a happy and prosperous 2012!
